ADFL has established an e-mail discussion list for chairs of foreign language departments. ADFLCH-L provides a moderated forum for department chairs to exchange queries and information with fellow chairs about issues of department administration. Chairs of ADFL-member departments are automatically included on this list. We invite you to share your questions, concerns, experiences, and advice with your colleagues. You can subscribe to or sign off the list at any time by sending a request to adfl@mla.org.
Instructions for Using the ADFL Discussion List
1. To post a new query to the list or to respond to a previous posting, send your message to ADFLCH-L@LISTS.mla.org.
All messages will be reviewed before they are posted to the list. The moderator of the list is David Goldberg, Associate Director of ADFL, who can be reached at david.goldberg@mla.org or 646 576-5134.
2. Please identify yourself and your institution in the body of any message you send to the list. Anonymous listings will not be posted.
3. Using the "Reply" function. You can use the "Reply" function of your mail program and your message will be sent to all list members. NOTE: Please include only the relevant portions of the original posting to which you are responding in your message.
4. Queries posted to the list should be as concise as possible.
5. Postings should be regarded as public documents. Chairs are advised not to post confidential or sensitive departmental information to the discussion list. Please do not reproduce, cite, or circulate the contents of any posted message without the permission of the message author. Phone numbers of ADFL member chairs may be found in the online Members Directory at www.adfl.org or in the list of Departmental Administrators in the September (Directory) issue of PMLA. The list will not carry job or conference announcements.
6. Should you wish to turn off your list membership temporarily (for example, when you go on vacation), address the following command to LISTSERV@LISTS.MLA.ORG (note that this is a different address from the address of the discussion list itself):
SET ADFLCH-L NOMAIL
When you want to start receiving mail again, send the command:
SET ADFLCH-L MAIL
Place the commands in the message area of your e-mail message, including no other text.
7. You may leave the list at any time by sending the command
SIGNOFF ADFLCH-L
to LISTSERV@LISTS.MLA.ORG. You do not need to include your name or any other information, but you must send the message from the e-mail address under which you are subscribed to the list.
8. TO SEARCH THE ADFLCH-L ARCHIVE, first, point your browser to http://lists.mla.org/cgi-bin/wa.exe and choose the list you wish to search (e.g., ADFLCH-L).
You will be prompted for your e-mail address and password. You must enter the e-mail address at which you receive your messages from ADFLCH-L. (Only subscribers to that list can search its archive.) If you do not yet have a password for the ADFLCH-L, follow the instructions for creating one. This requires that you submit a new password online and that our Web server send you an e-mail confirmation message that you must acknowledge per the instructions.
After logging in you will see the list's archive organized by week. To search, choose "Search Archives," then enter your search string in the appropriate box and click "Search." By clicking on the item number of each found message, you can read the whole text of the message.
9. For additional information on how you may control and configure your list membership, please refer to the Listserv manual available online at http://www.lsoft.com/manuals/1.8d/user/user.html.
